Will Maxey Achieves New Holland Master Tractor Technician Status
When Will Maxey joined Lloyd Ltd Newcastle almost seven years ago, he would never have imagined that less than a decade later he would be receiving his certificate recognising his Master Tractor Technician qualification, presented this week by Callum Nisbet, New Holland’s Area Technical Manager.
“I was thinking about returning to New Zealand where I had had two stints of contracting when a chat with a local farmer friend made me consider my future”, said Will. “He told me to get a career in agriculture and that going into the service side would be the best thing to do. He is a long-standing Lloyd Ltd customer so I contacted the local branch at Throckley and the rest is history! I didn’t take the traditional route of an apprenticeship, but did a traineeship instead, which involved shadowing experienced engineers for 18 months. For me, the best way to learn properly is hands-on – courses are great at giving you the basics, but I take it in better when I actually do it myself.”

This shadowing approach worked well for Will so it wasn’t long until he was given the opportunity to prove he could take the lead and get his own van to go out on farm. “I remember I went to do my first screen update which took me an afternoon. Now I can do it in 15 minutes! Being able to learn at my own pace with the back-up of the rest of the Service team at Lloyd Ltd Newcastle really helped me develop my skills so I am grateful for all their help and support. I am also really proud to have been recognised by New Holland – getting to Master Technician level has been really special.”
Callum commented, “At New Holland we are always grateful that engineers want to achieve this level of training and Will has done exceptionally well to do so without following the more traditional route of an apprenticeship. Learning on the job has clearly worked for Will, so he has been able to apply the knowledge that he has gained over the past six years to develop a really strong skillset which will greatly benefit Lloyd Ltd’s New Holland tractor customers. The process for achieving this accreditation is demanding and requires sponsorship from the dealership and then lengthy reviews of Will’s work and reports by specialists at New Holland. He is keen to learn and challenge himself – even working on the highly-specialised T8 models – and, most importantly, he is willing to ask questions. Will has proved to be a great ambassador for Lloyd Ltd and New Holland, and we look forward to watching him continue to develop his skills through the rest of his career.”
Scott Connolly, Lloyd Ltd Newcastle’s Service Manager, added, “Everyone at Lloyd Ltd Newcastle is incredibly proud of Will for this impressive achievement. It’s really special to have a member of our team recognised in this way and he should be incredibly proud of how he has gone about getting to this level. His friendly personality and committed attitude make him a pleasure to work with and we are looking forward to his continued progress over the years ahead. Well done, Will!”
