Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week at Lloyd Ltd

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2021 we have showcased the Apprenticeships we can offer at Lloyd Ltd.

At Lloyd Ltd we look to ‘Build the Future’ by future-proofing our workforce through training, retaining and offering opportunities to those interested in completing an Apprenticeship. Our apprentices gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeeded within their desired field, whilst learning about the business and progressing within their own careers.

Below you can learn more about our apprentices here at Lloyd Ltd and the opportunities available.

Joseph Nichol, Manitou Engineer – Carlisle

I completed my apprenticeship with Lloyd Ltd a few years ago after finishing the Construction Plant engineering course. Throughout my time as an apprentice I felt part of the team and everyone was willing to help me learn the skills and knowledge I needed to succeed. As part of the Apprenticeship I had to attend college which was also good as there was plenty to do and keep me interested. A lot of the learning at college was still practical and hands-on which helped when coming back to the workshop.

Throughout my apprenticeship Lloyd Ltd helped me understand the practical and theory side of the job. They gave me enough time within the working day to get the information I needed for the theory aspect, whilst also learning by doing the hands-on practical jobs.

I learnt a lot through my time as an apprentice with Lloyd Ltd and now that I am fully qualified, I am able to assist the new apprentices as they learn the skills of the trade. I think that an Apprenticeship is the best way to achieve qualifications and do well in this type of job role. There was lots of work to do in a busy environment but from this, and by getting advice off other members of staff, I was able to learn the skills I needed and was pushed in the right direction to succeed.

Robbie Frizell, Apprentice Engineer – Carlisle

I have worked for Lloyd Ltd for almost 4 years having started not long after I finished school.  I have enjoyed being an apprentice and I now only have my final exam to complete before I am a fully-qualified Engineer.

Throughout my Apprenticeship if I have ever needed help or to ask a question, everyone I work with has always been more than willing to help me and offer support. No-one would want to see you stuck as the team works well together to make sure everyone does well and gets the job done.

During my Apprenticeship I have attended Reaseheath College near Crewe for block release study on their Agricultural Engineering course. I have always enjoyed my time at college as on the course I have got to meet people from different parts of the country who have similar interests to me. The college has provided great support throughout my training and given me the help I needed to understand the academic side of being an Engineer.

Throughout the last few years of being an apprentice, Lloyd Ltd have always given me the support I have needed and ensured that I have had the time to complete the academic side of the Apprenticeship whilst also getting hands-on experience.

I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone who is interested in Engineering and likes to do practical work as well as learning the classroom-based side to a job.

Jay Thompson, Trainee Parts Advisor – Bishop Auckland

My name is Jay Thompson and I am a Trainee Parts Advisor at Lloyd Ltd Bishop Auckland. I’m completing a Trade Supplier Apprenticeship with Lloyd Ltd and Learning Skills Partnership.  I’ve been with the company since September 2020 and so far I’ve been involved with receiving items in Goods-In, serving the fitters in the workshop with parts they need, and contacting customers to let them know that their items are ready to collect as well as posting items out to customers.

From my first day here my colleagues at Lloyd Ltd have helped me settle in and are always on hand to help me with any problems I have to face.

Originally I didn’t plan completing an Apprenticeship as I just wanted to have a job, but now I realise how important it is to continue learning.

It’s only early days for my Apprenticeship as I’ve recently started the academic side with Learning Skills Partnership. All the learning is based on-line at the moment but I feel that it’s going to help me understand my role and also how important it is to have good Parts Advisors in a company like Lloyd Ltd.

Already I feel that opportunities I’ve been given by the company are brilliant but as well as that, I am now going to gain a qualification from my Apprenticeship training, as well as getting industry knowledge and receiving a wage.

Glen Dunbar, 4×4 Technician – Dumfries

Growing up, I wanted to work in the agricultural sector from a young age. I decided in around 5th year of secondary school that I wanted a job in agricultural engineering, and so I went down that path. Luckily an Apprenticeship came up at Lloyd Ltd and I applied and then got the job as an Agricultural Engineer apprentice.

I got to work on everything, from a straw bedder to a tractor which gave great variety to my day-to-day job. I did this for around 3 and a half years until a job came about within the workshop on the 4x4s, which are mainly Isuzus. I always fancied having a go at working on them so I took the opportunity when it arose.

I am still on working on that side of the workshop, doing anything from PDIs with extras to four-wheel alignment to diagnostic work. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Lloyd Ltd and would highly recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone thinking about going down the engineering path.

Rebecca Hudson – Trainee Accountant, Head Office

I have recently completed my Level 4 AAT qualification as an Apprenticeship and in Spring I will be starting my CIMA Apprenticeship.

I started my career with Lloyd Ltd as a Business Administration apprentice in the Accounts Department when I left school in 2015. After completing the Business Administration qualification, I was given the opportunity to study for the AAT Accountancy qualifications at a local college. Whilst doing this I decided that training to be an Accountant was something I wanted to achieve.

Lloyd Ltd has provided me the opportunity to do this and progress in the department. I have been supported throughout my training by Lloyd Ltd who have always encouraged me to progress both academically and professionally. During my AAT qualifications I attended Carlisle College on a weekly basis for training and the training for my CIMA qualification will be based mainly online. This shows that Apprenticeships can be delivered in many ways, to suit working life and personal life.

I chose to do an Apprenticeship rather than going to university as I wanted to gain practical experience, as well as academic knowledge. Having practical experience not only helps me in my studies, but gives me the skills I need to be successful in the work environment. Overall, I would recommend an Apprenticeship as a great way to get real-life experience whilst also learning the academic aspect of a job role.

Sarah Crowther – Trainee Accountant, Head Office

I joined the Company in August 2018 and during my time at Lloyd Ltd so far I have been working towards the Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship and now have the option to progress onto the Accountant Apprenticeship. I have had a great experience with Lloyd Ltd throughout my Apprenticeship whilst also completing the theory-based side of the training at Carlisle College.

Lloyd Ltd have majorly supported me throughout the early stages of my career with lots of help from my seniors and colleagues. Everyone is there to help you and make sure that you succeed.

I decided to choose the Apprenticeship route as it meant that I would be able to get my qualifications but also earn at the same time. With my knowledge and background within the agricultural industry my Apprenticeship has worked alongside this to boost my Accountancy skills.

I am looking forward to what is next to come!

Alan Johnston, Apprentice Engineer – Alnwick

I enjoy working as an Apprentice Engineer as there  is a wide variety of machines I get to learn about and work on, from lawncare up to combines. I live and work on a farm so I have always wanted a practical, ‘hands-on’ job and an Apprenticeship with Lloyd Ltd allowed me to do this.

I study Land-Based Service Engineering Level 3 at Reaseheath College. This normally involves going to the college on block release to do the classroom part of the Apprenticeship. This includes learning the working principles of agricultural machinery, for example engines, transmissions, electrics and hydraulics. I find it interesting learning how things work and enjoy the job satisfaction of diagnosing and repairing a machine fault for our customers.

An Apprenticeship is a great way of learning the academic information needed for a job, whilst also getting practical experience in something I enjoy.
